Red Flag Laws: A Threat To Freedom

Recently, red flag laws have been a popular topic of discussion in the media and while some on the left may truly believe these laws to be beneficial, this is an obvious attack on the American people’s basic human rights.

For those who are unfamiliar with red flag laws related to gun control, allow me to give a brief overview of how the left is trying to unarm you yet again. In general, red flag laws allow for anyone from a family member to a co-worker to (in some anecdotal cases) followers on social media the ability to “flag” you to the authorities as a threat to yourself or others. According to the Los Angeles Times, a member from this specified group can,

“ask a judge to issue a Gun Violence Restraining Order… If the order is issued — and it almost always is — the gun owner’s weapons will be seized by law enforcement for up to a year.”

The United States was founded on a few basic human rights and freedoms that were to be afforded to every citizen, and two of the most important ones are being thrown out the window with these laws. The first being, obviously, the Second Amendment which states “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”, and the other being that no citizen shall be “deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law.” Taking away a law-abiding citizen’s guns without cause is violating both of these fundamental rights of an American citizen.

Not only are these laws unconstitutional, but they are irresponsibly dystopian. The idea that citizens are now going police other citizens’ right to bear arms should scare you. The fact that someone, without probable cause and without any form of repercussions, can have your basic human right to protect yourself and your family taken away without having committed or even threatened to commit a crime is terrifying.

Already, 17 states around the country have enacted these laws, in different shapes and forms, and many Democrats are attempting to push it to the federal level. This is yet another attempt to give the government more control than it was ever designed to have. The US Constitution clearly states the federal government’s powers in Article I, Section 8, which are

“the power to coin money, to regulate commerce, to declare war, to raise and maintain armed forces, and to establish a Post Office.”

No where does it give the federal government the power to regulate private citizen’s firearm ownership.

To make things worse, now your First Amendment right to free speech is under attack too, as a number of weapons have already been seized by authorities due to non-threatening speech on social media. People should be outraged. The left is successfully attempting to turn our basic rights as law-abiding citizens into privileges only afforded to those with similar views.
