Democrats are calling out Republicans for naming the whistleblower, but their reasoning might be a bit disingenuous.
“I cannot stress just how wrong this is,” said Chuck Schumer while on the Senate floor. “We have federal whistleblower laws designed to protect the identity and safety of patriotic Americans who come forward to stand up for the Constitution.”
President Trump held a political rally in Kentucky where Senator Paul urged the media to disclose the identity of a federal whistleblower.
This is wrong.

“There should be bipartisan outrage at the public attempts by the president and a member of this body to expose the identity of a federal whistleblower,” Schumer continued.
“The whistleblower statute protects the accuser from being fired but says nothing about skeptics revealing his name,” Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) argued. “There is absolutely no statute that prevents anyone, other than the inspector general from releasing the accuser’s name.”
Republicans want the identity of the whistleblower to be publicly known so that way he can be called to publicly testify. If the Democrats want to remove a president elected by the people, then they should want a totally transparent process. Part of that process is making the person who started this whole thing share his side of the story, and have it kept on record.
Obviously, the entire plan falls apart if Democrats let that happen.
If Eric Ciaramella is ultimately called to testify he is going to be asked about his history with the Obama administration. He’s going to be asked about his personal political leanings, and he’s going to be asked about his day to day efforts to try and flip members of the White House against Trump.
Do you see now why Democrats don’t want his name out there?
Yes, they will say “we care about his safety!”, but people already know his name. It’s out there. At this point the safest thing to do for the guy would be to keep him in some sort of protection program (which he’s probably already in).
If something were to happen to Ciaramella, things would only get WORSE for Republicans. This is something that Democrats don’t understand. Republicans want this man to survive and make it to testify. Plus, how much danger is he really in? I mean, it’s not like he has dirt on the Clintons…
