New Report Shows Nearly 40 Million Social Security Numbers Were Stolen By Illegal Immigrants

Approximately 40 million Social Security numbers have been stolen and used by illegal immigrants to get work, according to records obtained by an immigration reform group.

According to the Immigration Reform Law Institute, “39 million instances where names and Social Security numbers on W-2 tax forms did not match the corresponding Social Security records” between the years 2012-2016.

The group’s report brings attention to the Obama-era policy of not sending “no match” letters to employers notifying them that numbers used by employees does not match their actual identity. The change in policy came after Obama’s decision to approve amnesty for hundreds of thousands of immigrants under his DACA executive order.

While reform groups have said that illegal immigration is often a “victim-less crime”, the IRLI report shows that is not the case, especially for young people who have their identities stolen.

“The Social Security numbers of young children are especially sought by illegal aliens, as this theft is likely to go undetected for years,” the group said. “As children reach late teenage years and apply for credit for cars, student loans, and other needs, they may find that their credit has been compromised with mortgages, credit cards, and criminal records attached to their identity.”

Dale L. Wilcox, executive director of the IRLI, said that this report “debunks the idea that being in the country illegally is a victim-less crime.”

“Millions of Americans, in many cases children, are having their identities stolen to enable even more criminal activity,” he went on to say. “Illegal aliens should not reap Social Security benefits that result from the commission of identity theft.”

You often hear that “illegal immigrants take the jobs most Americans don’t want,” but that isn’t the issue here. Millions of Americans have had their identities stolen, and their futures could be unfairly affected for things they didn’t do. When a kid applies for a college loan he or she could be denied because of what someone else did with their Social Security number.

Most of this could have been avoided had the Obama administration continued the practice of verifying Social Security numbers with employers, but unfortunately he decided to value the well being of illegal immigrants over the lives of the American people. While that is not surprising, it is incredibly sad that America was once led by a man who didn’t put his own people first.
