Every player has the right to take a knee during the national anthem, but at the same time every fan has the right to turn off the television, and walk away from the NFL for good.
For Roger Goodell, and the owners, this is a terrifying thought. Once upon a time the idea of Americans not watching football was unfathomable. Now, it is a brutal reality that the league has to come to grips with.
While the NFL tries to figure out what to do next, president Trump delivered a striking blow that could really bring the league to its knees.
In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, president Trump tweeted about the amount of tax benefits the NFL receives on an annual basis.
“Why is the NFL getting massive tax breaks while at the same time disrespecting our Anthem, Flag and Country? Change tax law!”
Of course, the NFL is no longer a not-for-profit company, but that doesn’t mean they don’t benefit from HUGE tax breaks. Plus, most of these billion-dollar stadiums are paid for using taxpayer money.
The NFL players, coaches, and executives are not doing themselves any favors by trying to force their way into the political conversation.
It’s funny, these millionaires never had a problem standing for the anthem, and cashing their checks before. Now that Trump is in office, everyone has to be a protester like it’s the “cool” thing to do.
They try to deny it, but the numbers don’t lie. The NFL has seen viewership drop over the last several years, and unless something drastic is done, the league may reach the point of no return.
For some reason, most Americans don’t like watching a bunch of rich cry-babies disrespecting our national anthem. Now the president is might finally be doing something about it.
