Following talks of peace between North and South Korea, Republicans in Congress are now pressing colleagues to support President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Since 1901, the award has been given annually to individuals who have “done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”
Representative Luke Messer (R-Indiana) says that the president should be recognized for his efforts in bringing Kin Jong Un to the negotiating table with South Korean president Moon Jae-in.
“We are seeing unprecedented progress toward peace, and it’s a direct result of President Trump’s strong leadership,” Messer said. “Following this historic announcement, President Trump should get the Nobel Peace Prize. Our peace through strength strategy is delivering never before seen results.”
Back in 2009 Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for essentially being the first black person to become president. While he didn’t actually do anything in regards to bringing peace to the world, he was still recognized for this accomplishment.
In the years following being recognized, Obama proceeded to drop 20,000+ bombs on the countries in the Middle East, blowing up two hospitals in the process. Many would argue this flies in the face of what the Peace Prize is about.
Messer isn’t the only one pushing for Trump to be recognized for his efforts to stabilize the Korean Penninsula. Senator Lindsey Graham acknowledged that the possibility of peace in the region “wouldn’t have happened without Trump.”
“What happened? Donald Trump convinced North Korea and China he was serious about bringing about change,” the South Carolina Senator said. “We’re not there yet, but if this happens, President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.”
Graham also issued a warning to the North Korean leader, saying that he would be wise not to test Trump.
“The worst thing Kim Jong Un could do is play Trump,” Graham said. “To go through all these motions and go back to the old way of doing business, Donald Trump will not tolerate being played.”
“We’re either going to have peace or we’re going to have a war now because Kim Jong Un has made a mistake if he’s not serious.”
The president tweeted the following after news that the meeting between North and South Korea had occurred:
“After a furious year of missile launches and Nuclear testing, a historic meeting between North and South Korea is now taking place. Good things are happening, but only time will tell!”
He followed that up by stating “KOREAN WAR TO END! The United States, and all of its GREAT people, should be very proud of what is now taking place in Korea!”
Time will tell if Kim Jong Un will keep his word, but the fact remains that without President Donald Trump, none of this would even be possible.
Thank you, President Trump, for showing the world what real leadership looks like!
