The Church of Sweden has just announced that their clergy will refrain from calling God “He”, “Him”, “Lord”, and other gender-specific names, all in the name of political correctness.
Never mind the fact that Jesus refers to God as “Father” throughout the new testament… The Church of Sweden believes they know better than what the Good Book says.
The church, headed by Archbishop Antje Jackelen, says that this is hardly the first time they have discussed whether or not they should refer to God in context of gender.
“Theologically, for instance, we know that God is beyond our gender determinations,” Jackelen said. “God is not human.”
Maybe they have a different Bible over there, but last time I checked God did take the form of a human at one point in history. That human was a dude. That dude was Jesus. Also, a man.
The thing is, this has nothing to do with God, and whether or not He has a gender. This has to do with people finding a reason to get upset.
If a pastor is giving a sermon, and refers to the “Lord”, he isn’t attacking feminists. Calling the almighty “He” is not some attempt to put men ahead of women. That’s just what the Bible says!
The people who have time to get upset about what gender God is should be spending that energy on bigger problems.
On the flip side, it should be noted that the archbishop is a woman, and perhaps the power of sitting at the head of a church leads one to believe they can alter doctrine. Maybe Jackelen feels as though, since she is in charge, she has the right to speak on behalf of those who actually wrote the Bible. That isn’t a feminist thing, it’s a person on a power trip.
God honestly does not care whether we call Him a “He’, and “She”, whatever. God is concerned with the hearts of his children. Right now, He sees that a “church” is more concerned with political correctness than educating its body on what the Bible says.
